Greetings
"Assalamu alaikum" (Peace be upon you) - Most respectful "Bonjour" or "Salaam" - Also acceptable Response: "Wa alaikum assalam" (And upon you be peace)
Shake hands or place hand over heart as greeting.
Dining Etiquette
- Remove shoes before eating on floor
- Eat with right hand (traditional)
- Share from communal dishes
- Accept tea and snacks offered
- Compliment the food
- Finish with "Bismillah" (in God's name) and "Alhamdulillah" (praise to God)
In Homes & Mosques
- Remove shoes at entrance
- Accept hospitality graciously
- Don't sit until invited
- Women may not enter some mosques
- Photography usually forbidden in mosques
Respecting Ramadan
- If traveling during Ramadan:
- Don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight
- Restaurants may be closed during day
- Evening atmosphere is festive
- Greet with "Ramadan Karim"
